What is Cable Theft?
Cable television theft is the illegal sending or receiving of cable programming services without the express authorization of, or payment to, Cable Bahamas. There are two types of cable theft, active and passive.
Active theft occurs when someone knowingly and willfully makes an illegal physical connection to the cable system and/or attaches or tampers with equipment to allow the receipt of unauthorized services. Commercial theft occurs in an environment where the proprietor receives financial gains from the illegal services (ie a bar, restaurant, or rental accommodation).
Passive theft is when a potential customer moves into a location, finds the cable service is on, but does not notify the cable company, or receives services additional to those they are being billed for, and does not notify Cable Bahamas.
Theft also occurs when individuals or companies develop, tamper with, manufacture, or otherwise provide equipment, which provides unauthorized access to cable services and receives compensation for that equipment.
Cable theft is a serious crime and is liable, on summary conviction, by a fine or imprisonment. Cable Bahamas works with law enforcement authorities in The Bahamas to stop the unauthorized use of equipment and services.
Why should I care about cable theft?
Cable theft affects everyone. It can affect your picture quality by weakening the signal. In some areas, poor picture quality is the reason for service calls and other system maintenance which increase system costs, and your cable rates.
